Common Causes of Weak Seals

The short answer: a weak seal is rarely one cause — it’s one of five variables out of balance: temperature, time, pressure, film, and container. The most common order is: wrong temperature > film/cup mismatch > debris or deformation on the rim > dirty or worn sealing die > insufficient pressure or alignment. Checking each in turn usually locates the problem. If sealing is still unstable after that, the machine likely needs factory service or a parts replacement.

Five most common causes and self-checks

1. Wrong sealing temperature (most common)

Too low → the heat-seal layer never fully melts and peels open; too high → the film burns through and the rim deforms. Confirm the temperature setting suits your film and cup material — cold and hot drinks seal at different temperatures.

2. Film and cup material mismatch

PP cups need PP film, PET needs PET-compatible film, paper cups need PE-compatible film. When materials are incompatible, the weld fails even at the right temperature. (See our article on which film to pair with PP, PET and paper cups.)

3. Water, residue, or deformation on the rim

Syrup, tapioca residue or a water film on the rim separates the weld surfaces; a deformed rim will not seal flat. Before sealing, confirm the rim is clean and intact.

4. Dirty, carbon-fouled, or worn sealing die

Over time the sealing head accumulates film debris, syrup and carbon, conducting heat unevenly; a worn die leaves an uneven pressing face. Clean the head regularly and replace the die when badly worn.

5. Insufficient pressure or misaligned registration

Low pressing force leaves the film loosely bonded; if auto-registration drifts, the film misses the rim center and the edge seals incompletely.

When to call the factory

If temperature, film and rim have all been checked and sealing is still unstable, the cause may be a worn die, a drifting temperature sensor, or a faulty film-feed mechanism — these require disassembly and parts replacement, best handled by the factory to avoid secondary damage from self-disassembly.
